The infestations of bed bugs in Broward County are found both in rooms (under carpet, behind baseboards, inside electrical outlet, etc) as well as in room contents (bed frames, mattresses, furniture, clothing, etc).
While the application of residual pesticides may provide adequate control of these pests in the infested rooms, applications of chemical pesticides is not always desirable, or adequate for elimination of bed bugs from room contents. This is especially true about beds, sofas, and other furniture that has prolonged and direct contact with human users, which can potentially result in considerable transfer of chemical pesticides to people
Heat treatments have been used effectively by some PMPs to quickly eliminate live bed bugs and their eggs from the seams of mattresses and other cloth items.
As DDT (an organochlorine) was outlawed in the 70’s, and thankfully so, this presented a new problem for the new breed of bed bug. As we know, the experts are now looking for new alternatives and have become increasingly frustrated. What will be the next miracle toxin to kill these bugs that sleep in our beds and determine the long-term effects on our environment and families somewhere in the process, and even the experts know that this is not the answer.
What is happening to get a stronghold on these bugs is a program referred to as IPM (Integrated Pest Management). Those following this path are people and groups truly committed to answers including chemists, the government, and us at Florida Pest Control Center.
